The Reality of Conflict

Conflict is unavoidable in any meaningful relationship.

Where there are two people with emotions, values, and goals, there will eventually be disagreement.

However, conflict itself is NOT the real problem.

The real problem is HOW people handle conflict.

Most people respond to conflict emotionally instead of strategically. They attempt to defend themselves, prove themselves right, or win the argument. In doing so, they often destroy the relationship they were trying to protect.

This approach aligns with the communication philosophy often discussed by entrepreneurs such as Myron Golden and business strategist Vusi Thembekwayo. Both emphasize that the ability to handle difficult conversations calmly is a key trait of leadership and influence.

Research from the Harvard Negotiation Project shows that most interpersonal conflicts escalate because individuals attack each other's CHARACTER instead of addressing the PROBLEM itself.

Therefore, the first principle of conflict resolution is simple: SEPARATE THE PROBLEM FROM THE PERSON.

The goal is not simply to win an argument. The goal is to PRESERVE THE RELATIONSHIP while solving the problem.
